Does Your Website Need a Rebuild, or Just a Re-Theme

July 26, 2026

Most people with a website that isn’t working call it wanting “a new website,” without necessarily knowing whether the actual problem is how it looks or how it’s built. Those are two very different jobs, priced and scoped very differently — and starting the wrong one wastes both time and money.

A Re-Theme is the right call when the structure underneath is sound — the site is organised sensibly, loads reasonably well, and just looks dated or no longer matches the brand. That’s a cosmetic job: new design applied over a foundation that already works.

A Rebuild is the right call when the problem is underneath the surface — a site built on a platform that’s hard to maintain, structured in a way that actively works against SEO, or, increasingly, an AI-generated site that looked fine as a first draft but was never built on a real, editable foundation. No amount of cosmetic polish fixes a structural problem — the same logic behind our Revenue Engineering page, Built to Scale: you can’t decorate your way out of a foundation that was never built to hold what’s now sitting on it.

The honest way to tell the difference: if you’re mainly unhappy with how it looks, ask about a Re-Theme first. If you’re not sure what’s actually under the hood, that’s worth a proper look before assuming either way.

More on both options, on our Website Design page.

FAQ

What if we’re not sure which one we need? That’s the most common starting point, not an unusual one — a quick look at the existing site is usually enough to tell which one actually applies.
