Is AI Actually Changing Marketing — Or Just the Marketing Pitch?

July 26, 2026

Every agency pitch this year seems to open with the same word. AI-powered. AI-driven. AI-first. It’s worth asking a plainer question before signing anything: what is actually different about the marketing itself, versus what’s different about how it’s being sold to you?

Something has genuinely changed. AI tools have made certain kinds of execution faster — drafting more ad variations, analysing larger datasets, testing more combinations in less time than before. That’s real, and it’s useful.

Something hasn’t changed at all. None of that replaces the harder, slower judgment calls — knowing which audience actually matters, what a business’s real constraint is, what a customer needs to hear to trust a brand enough to buy from it. Speed helps you test more ideas faster. It doesn’t tell you which idea was right in the first place.

Alongside traditional SEO, there’s now a genuinely new, adjacent discipline worth understanding: being visible and citable inside AI-generated answers — ChatGPT, Perplexity, Google’s AI Overviews — sometimes labelled GEO. It’s real, and it’s worth paying attention to. But it builds directly on the same foundation good SEO always has — clear, well-structured, genuinely useful copywriting. It isn’t a replacement discipline, and treating it as a shiny standalone service is usually a sign the pitch has gotten ahead of the substance.

The honest answer: AI is changing how fast marketing gets executed. It hasn’t yet changed what makes marketing actually work. Anyone selling you the second claim is selling you the pitch, not the substance.

FAQ

Should I still care about being found in AI answers, not just Google? Yes — it’s worth paying attention to, but as an extension of good SEO and copywriting fundamentals, not a reason to abandon them.
