Marketing Has Changed. Has Your Thinking?

September 18, 2026 1 min read

Marketing is changing faster than ever. AI is reshaping how businesses create and analyse. Search behaviour is evolving. Customer journeys are becoming more fragmented. And consumers are interacting with brands across more platforms than ever before. Yet many businesses are still measuring marketing through the same familiar metrics:
Impressions. Clicks. Followers. Leads.Revenue Engineering →

These numbers matter, but they don’t tell the whole story.

The customer journey has changed. A customer might discover a business on social media, research it through Google, ask an AI platform for information, visit the website and only make contact days later. The customer doesn’t think in channels. They think in experiences. That means modern marketing has to look beyond individual platforms and consider how the different parts of the digital journey work together.

AI is creating more. Is it creating more value? AI is now firmly part of marketing. Research from HubSpot found that 66% of marketers surveyed globally were already using AI in their roles in 2025. But when everyone can create more content, analyse more data and move faster, volume alone becomes less valuable. The competitive advantage isn’t necessarily producing more. It’s producing something relevant, credible and commercially meaningful.

The new marketing question…
Marketing has traditionally focused on:
“How do we get more attention?”
The more important question today may be:
“What happens after we get it?”
Because clicks don’t automatically become customers. Leads don’t automatically become revenue. And more activity doesn’t automatically mean more growth.

At LDP Digital, this is where our thinking around Revenue Engineering comes in. We believe the future of digital growth isn’t simply about doing more marketing. It’s about understanding how marketing, technology, data, customer experience and commercial outcomes connect.

Marketing has changed.
The businesses that recognise that change will be asking different questions.

Revenue Engineering | Turning Digital Into Revenue

Navigating the Shift: Big Questions

Relying solely on surface-level metrics like clicks, impressions, and followers. The modern marketplace is fragmented, so evaluating success based on isolated platform numbers misses how all the moving parts connect to guide a buyer from initial discovery to final decision.

Getting attention through traditional clicks, impressions, and followers is no longer enough. Clicks do not automatically turn into customers, nor do leads automatically turn into revenue. The focus must shift to what happens post-attention to convert interest into actual commercial growth.

Not necessarily. While AI lets marketers create more content and analyze data faster, high volume alone is losing value as everyone gains access to the same tools. The real competitive advantage isn’t producing more content; it is producing content that is relevant, credible, and commercially meaningful.

While these metrics (impressions, clicks, followers, and leads) matter, they don’t tell the full story of today’s non-linear customer journey. A single customer might discover a brand on social media, ask an AI platform for advice, search Google, visit a website, and only convert days later. Measuring isolated platform metrics fails to track how these pieces work together to drive actual revenue.
