Why ‘Get Me More Leads’ Is Almost Never the Right Brief

July 26, 2026 1 min read

It’s the most common brief a marketer ever receives: get me more leads. It’s also, more often than not, the wrong ask.Revenue Engineering

When a business plateaus, the instinct is to turn up the volume dial. But if the actual constraint sits somewhere else — a sales team already at capacity, a quality filter that’s missing, a follow-up process that can’t keep pace — more leads doesn’t fix the plateau. It just makes the existing problem more visible, faster.

Picture a sales team that’s already stretched thin, working through leads in the order they arrive. Doubling the number of leads coming in doesn’t give them more hours in the day. It just means more of those leads sit longer before anyone gets to them, and closing rate quietly drops even as lead volume climbs on the dashboard — a bigger number that, on its own, means less than it looks like.

Before asking for more, it’s worth asking three quieter questions first:

  • 1. What happens to a lead the moment it arrives — and how long does that actually take?
  • 2. Of the leads already coming in, what share is the sales team genuinely able to work properly?
  • 3. If volume doubled tomorrow, would anything downstream actually break?

If any of those answers is uncomfortable, that’s the real brief. Not more leads — fixing what happens to the ones already there.

More is easy to ask for. Better is usually the harder, and more useful, question. More on what that shift actually looks like on our page, Lead Quality.

Frequently asked

Yes — early on, with a new product, or in a low-ticket, high-volume business where you haven’t yet learned who converts. The shift toward quality over quantity matters most once you already know who your best customer looks like, and you’re mainly drowning in people who don’t fit that shape.
