Retargeting Isn’t “Those Ads That Follow You” — It’s Just Better Timing

July 26, 2026

Retargeting has a reputation problem that’s mostly earned by bad retargeting. Everyone has a story about the same product following them around the internet for three weeks after they’d already bought it, or already decided against it — which is exactly the version of retargeting that gives the whole discipline a bad name.

That version is a failure of restraint, not proof the idea itself is flawed. Retargeting done properly isn’t about showing the same ad to everyone who ever visited a website. It’s about recognising a specific signal — someone who looked at a specific product, filled in part of a form, or spent real time on a specific page — and reaching that person again, with something relevant, before the moment passes, and then stopping once it has.

The real standard is segmentation and a frequency cap: who saw what, how recently, and how many times they’ve already seen a follow-up before it becomes noise instead of a nudge. The industry’s fluffy shorthand — “retarget everyone who visited the site” — is exactly the version that earns retargeting its reputation as the ads that won’t stop following you.

Properly targeted, retargeting is simply cheaper and more relevant than reaching a cold stranger, because the person on the other end already raised their hand once — the same idea our Revenue Engineering page, Market Retention, makes about paying full price to meet the same person twice.

The goal was never “show the ad more.” It was always “reach the right person again, at the moment that’s actually still useful to them.” More on how we build that discipline on our Paid Marketing page, under Conversion.

FAQ

Won’t retargeting always feel intrusive to some people? Poorly capped and poorly segmented retargeting will, every time. Properly capped and properly segmented retargeting is the version most people don’t even notice, because it’s relevant enough not to register as an ad.
