Beyond the Campaign: The Commercial Standard for Modern Marketing

October 9, 2026 2 min read

Marketing earns its place at the leadership table when its contribution to business value becomes
clear.
Visibility creates opportunity. Enquiries signal interest. Revenue reveals how effectively a business turns that interest into value.Marketing

For leadership teams, understanding the relationship between these outcomes is essential to making sound investment decisions.

A campaign report may show increasing traffic, growing lead volumes and a declining cost per enquiry. The commercial assessment goes further: who became a customer, what did they spend, and what margin did the business retain?

The value of a connected view.

According to Nielsen’s 2025 Annual Marketing Report, which surveyed 1,400 marketers worldwide, only 32% measured traditional and digital media spend holistically.

This finding highlights a gap in cross-media measurement. From LDP Digital’s perspective, it also raises a broader leadership question: how clearly can a business connect its marketing investment to the customer journey and eventual commercial outcome?

When campaign data, customer records and sales outcomes sit in separate systems, decisions are made from a partial picture.

Connecting them creates the opportunity to assess where value is being created, where opportunities lose momentum and where further investment is justified.

When the outcome changes, the assessment changes. In a September 2026 Think with Google article, Christophe Combette described how Learning Care and Wpromote connected offline CRM data to Google Ads, using later customer milestones to inform campaign optimisation.

Google reported four times as many student registrations alongside a 22% reduction in cost per lead. The significance lies in the outcome being measured: registrations gave the business a clearer view of customer acquisition than enquiry volume alone. These results belong to that specific case. Google’s guidance on high-quality lead generation reinforces this approach by recommending that businesses examine sales values, conversion rates and the time customers take to progress through the journey.

A higher standard for investment.
Cost per lead remains a useful efficiency measure. Its commercial meaning depends on what follows. A higher-cost enquiry may become a valuable, profitable customer.
A lower-cost enquiry may require considerable sales effort and never progress.

The leadership task is to understand those differences before allocating the next rand.
At LDP Digital, this is the thinking behind Revenue Engineering: examining how marketing, websites, technology, data and customer journeys work together to support revenue. Our view is that a strong marketing assessment should account for opportunity quality, sales progression, customer value and profitability, while recognising that longer buying cycles take time to mature.

The next marketing investment deserves a clear understanding of the value created by the last one
